User/Inventors

There's no great feature to announce today,(that'll change very soon;) but I couldn't let another day go by without pointing out something that we'd hoped from the beginning has come to pass. Users are inventing. We're a fairly creative bunch, and any good cup of coffee will bring forth two or three new uses for a voicethread, but from the beginning we all said that although we would start it, it would be the users that led the way, that if you put a compelling new tool in peoples hands they would use it, inventing new ways to tell stories and collaborate. It has already begun to happen. We don't think we're drinking our own Kool-Aid when we say our users have created some awesome content. Many voicethreads are explorations and first time attempts, but the human voice is filled with complex meta-data that can't be reduced to symbology. People are using this oldest of tools to transform images that held no meaning to the outside world, sometimes no meaning even to close family, into complex, and sometimes even sublime, stories.
Again, no features to talk about today, just a thank you from the whole development team for rewarding our hard work.

It is a great product, but you have to add a few more social tools.

We need:
* to be able to search by username

* to be able to mark a video as a favorite (rather than only being able to subscribe to a user)

* a way to follow/be notified of a users new posts (rss feeds?)

* profile pages

* the ability to invite family to participate without the sign-up process (like a Flickr guest account)

I like VoiceThread, I'll keep my eye on it!

Here's a question...maybe a new feature idea. Can I "record" by playing back an audio mp3 file on my computer. I'd like to pre-prepare a commentary that integrates music, so I could play it back on my computer. Can your integrated recording device pick this up (sort of line-in rather than mic.)

Hi Chistiane, yes you could do it the way you described, but there's another way. If you have a 'pro'account you can upload an mp3 file as a comment. This allows you to create complex voice/music commentary. Here's a good example exactly this use, http://voicethread.com/view.php?b=1689 you can really hear the higher sound quality that this method delivers.

Thanks,

hi Promoguy,
We hear you on all of those, most will be here shortly and the last one already is(sort of) Our system requires all commenters to be registered users because it's the only way to enforce privacy settings which are really important to most of our users. But if you invite family or friends through our site, we send them an invitation link, which if clicked allows them to comment immediately, prior to fully registering. We're working hard to lower the participatory threshold as absolutely low as possible. Let me know if you have any thoughts on how to improve that.
Thanks,

-Steve
